5 Reasons You Must Cycle L'Alpe d'Huez

5 Reasons You Must Cycle L'Alpe d’Huez

To Ride Where Many Have Ridden

You will be riding on the beating heart of French alpine cycling. L'Alpe d'Huez is one of the main mountains in the Tour de France and has been a stage finish almost every year since 1976. Ride it and you'll test yourself on the same mountains that made all the great names in professional cycling history.

Bragging Rights

It is the most legendary ride in all of cycling. If you've ever watched the Tour de France or appreciate the superhuman endurance of a pro cyclist, odds are you know L'Alpe d'Huez. TV can't tell the full story, you have to ride it to really experience it.
Eat, sleep and breathe cycling? All your club riding buddies at home know the Alpe d'Huez? Ride it and you're guaranteed to make them green with jealousy. Do it in under 75 minutes and you can become a legend in your own right.

Vertical Variety

L'Alpe d'Huez offers riders a stunning 13.8 km climb at an average 7.9 percent grade. The main route has 21 switchbacks and at least four different ways to ascend by road bike. Oh, and the view doesn't get any better... until you reach the top, that is.

Accessible Amenities

The Alpe d'Huez is easily accessible and well maintained with a large town at the top. There's plenty of hotel accommodation and other amenities waiting for you at the end of your ride. L'Alpe d'Huez is also a ski area and the town sits at the base of a massive ski area that ascends even higher into the peaks and glaciers of this beautiful region of the Central French Alps.

The Descent

One aspect of climbing L'Alpe d'Huez that isn't much discussed is the descent. It is a fantastic downhill, especially on a quiet summer day with little traffic. While many of the switchbacks are too tight to be taken at full speed, they’re still a blast to rip around!
