Noyers-sur-Serein, In Burgundy
Northeast of Vézelay heading back up towards Chablis lies the picturesque village of Noyers-sur-Serein nestled along a bend in the gently meandering Serein River (keep in mind "serein" means peaceful in French). This little gem of a hamlet holds the distinction of being one of France's "plus beaux villages". Its one of our favorites simply because it has absolutely everything one would expect of a beautiful country village, here's what awaits you: narrow, winding cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, a main village square tucked around a 15th-century church, small squares where streets intersect, ramparts and fortifications all the way around, and during the nice weather season lots of flowers to add splashes of color here and there. Be sure to stroll the rue de la Petite Etape aux Vins and admire the handsome 17th-century Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) building.
