Elbe River Trail: Prague to Dresden

This superb trail leads you along one of the largest European rivers, the Elbe (total length 360 km), and through two countries, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Starting in Prague, close to the river's source amongst the mighty Krkonose Mountains, you'll enjoy one of our most leisurely routes. Go zoom downhill and comfortably pedal on roads that are mostly straight. Like the majority of our cycling routes following water courses, this path offers beautiful views of the river and the surroundings. One very special highlight is the confluence of the Elbe with the Vltava River in beautiful Melnik, Czech Republic.

Along the route, there are also many interesting monuments in the towns and villages that have historical centers protected to preserve their historical charm, such as in Vrchlabi, Jaromer, Hradec Kralove, Pardubice, Kolin, Podebrady and Stara Boleslav. In addition, there are a host of chateaux and castles you may choose to visit. For sure, you'll not want to miss the stunning palaces at Kuks, Vrchlabi, Kuneticka Hora, Melnik, Libechov and Decin before pushing through to the spa town of Bad Schandau and finishing your extraordinary adventure in Dresden.

Informations & Recommendations

Arrival in Prague

From the Prague airport take a taxi on your own and transfer to the 1st hotel.

Bike route conditions :

The Danube Trail has excellent cycling infrastructure: dedicated, paved cycling paths, rest stops for cyclists, and good signage and navigation through larger towns or cities. Most of the cycling is on bicycle paths, right by the banks of the Danube River. The cycling is off the bike paths mostly in towns/cities.

As for the Elbe River Trail, about 70% of the route is on dedicated cyclo paths while the rest is on back roads with very low traffic; only about 5% of the route is on busier roads. It is the first day from Prague where the route is mixed on paved sections and short sections of compacted dirt or gravel (forest and field roads) and where you can encounter some busy roads. For the last 2 and a half days the cycle trail is all on dedicated, paved cycling trails, which are a joy to cycle!
