Regional information

The region of Provence comprises the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Var, and Bouches-du-Rhone and parts of the departments of Vaucluse and Alpes-Maritimes.

There are different layers of Provencal life as well: the "Roman" towns of Orange, Nimes and Arles; the medieval bastions of Les Baux and Avignon; the essence of Provencal landscape in the Luberon mountains and finally the great city life style of Aix-en- Provence.

Provence inland, this region slightly inland from the coast, has a great diversity and also a great general views that are very characteristic of the typical village: houses with red roofs, narrow streets and their exposure to the sun.

Testimonial

Day 1: Arrive in Avignon

Day 1 is arrival day and meeting day, which also gives the opportunity to explore the Center of Avignon. An English speaking team-member will welcome you at the hotel in the early evening for orientation and bike delivery. After, you can go to visit Avignon in a unique way with our cultural treasure hunt in the historical center! Avignon is a culturally and historically rich city with much to see and much to learn. Our Treasure Hunt will introduce you to the most important sites and give you a fun way to pass a couple hours after arrival. We strongly encourage a little time in Avignon, and history buffs could arrive a day early and pass an extra night exploring Avignon! Dinner on your own in a local restaurant tonight; we provide suggestions.

Day 2: Ride to Uzes - 52km (32mi)

First active day is by bike, a route that moves out of Villeneuve-les-Avignon through the Gard forests and vineyards and to visit the famous roman aqueduct Pont du Gard which dominates the river at over 165 feet high. Swimming is possible in the river. You will cycle on to Uzes, a beautiful Provencal village with plane tree lined streets. Night in Uzes in a very charming 3 star hotel, Les Entraigues, with swimming pool. Dinner on your own. Breakfast included.
Adventurers: an option to do Via Ferrata is possible today! Via Ferrata is like rock climbing with the help of steps and security line on fixed cables. To add this option, you must book at least 1 month in advance, price is 90 euros/person - guided activity with local professional.

Day 3: Cycle & Canoe to St Remy de Provence - 38km (24mi) cycling, 8km (5mi) paddling

An exciting combination of cycling and paddling today. You will hop on a canoe and paddle down the Gardon River through the famous Gorges du Gardon. You will start the day with a short and flat warm-up bike ride from your hotel to the village of Collias to start your canoe trip through a calm stretch of the Gardon River. Your bikes are transferred to meet you at the pull out spot at the Pont du Gard. You then cycle from there to the beautiful village of Saint-Remy-de-Provence where you will spend the night. Dinner and breakfast included.

Day 4: Hiking - 20km (12mi)

Put your hiking shoes on and get on the GR 6 trail that will lead you to the nearby hills above St Remy known as the Alpilles. This hike will take you along to the Citadel of Les Baux de Provence. After your visit of the village we suggest you walk to the Val d'Enfer and its rock formations, then make your way back to Saint Remy. Back to the same hotel with dinner and breakfast included. Hiking with hills at Les Baux.
This hike isn't available in July due to fire risks and will be replaced by a biking loop around St Rémy (42km).
Outside this period, the forestry service still has the right to close the trails as needed due to the reason above.

Day 5: Ride to Fontaine de Vaucluse - 48km (30mi)

After breakfast, you cycle on to Fontaine de Vaucluse where you spend the night. On the way to Fontaine de Vaucluse, you have the possibility to cycle on to Isle sur la Sorgue, which is a short 10km trip from Fontaine. Isle sur la Sorgue is a charming town located on the river Sorgue, that is very worth visiting! Night in a charming hotel with dinner out on your own. Breakfast included. OPTION: Cooking Class. If you book the cooking class for today, it starts at 9:30 am. The class starts with a garden visit and then cooking all morning which finishes at lunch to enjoy your work. After the class we transfer you to Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Day 6: Mountain Bike Loop - 34km (21mi)

For your day, we have planned for you to do a nice 'balade' on mountain bikes. You will ride a short distance on paved roads to meet the trail and after you will have a nice quiet trail to follow that makes a loop and brings you back to the road. The trail is a mix of wide trail and sand/gravel to sections of single track. None of it is technical or requires advance mountain bike skill. Approximately 30 km cycling and 3 hours. Return to the same hotel in Fontaine de Vaucluse, dinner on your own. Breakfast included.

Day 7: Fontain de Vaucluse to Bedoin - 43km (27mi)

Today, ride to Bedoin at the foot of Mont Ventoux. You will ride on typical narrow little country side road from Provence and Luberon. Enjoy nice panoramic views and roads in the middle of limestone cliffs. Approaching the Mont Ventoux, you will ride in the vineyards of Provence wine. Very charming 3 star hotel with swimming pool. Dinner and breakfast included.

Day 8: Departure day

Departure Day, we will transfer you back to Avignon rail station at 10:00 am where you can get a train to Paris or other destination. Breakfast included.
