This cycling tour starts in the beautiful city of Bordeaux and moves on to explore the Dordogne region, its vineyards, fine food and medieval towns and castles.
On your way, you will visit the famous Saint Emilion region and its vineyards. You will then cycle to Bergerac, home of the famous Cyrano but also some great wines. Your next ride will lead you to Les Eyzies, renowned for its prehistoric sites and the Font de Gaume Cave. Your cycling trip will finish in Sarlat, a charming medieval town, where you can visit the Cathedral.

Day 1 :  

Arrive in Bordeaux

Arrive in Bordeaux - a large city with good rail access and commercial airline flights from several European capitals. The historic city is very picturesque and offers visits including the wine museums and shops for local wines. Orientation in the evening at your hotel with bike delivery and set up.

Day 2 :  

Ride to Saint Emilion

Distance 1 : 32 Miles - 51 Km 
Elevation gain 1 : 370 Meters 

Ride out of Bordeaux on bike paths all the way to the charming town of Creon, and then continue through wine country all the way to St Emilion. Discover this UNESCO World Heritage site, with fascinating Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets. The Romans planted vineyards in what was to become St Emilion as early as the 2nd century AD. The town was named after the monk Emilion, a travelling confessor, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock in the 8th century. It was the monks who followed him that started the wine production in the area. Take some time to explore this charming town and visit the Tour du Roy which dates back from 1237.

Day 3 :  

Bike to Sainte Radegonde

Distance 1 : 24 Miles - 38 Km 
Elevation gain 1 : 491 Meters 

Today you keep cycling east and head towards Sainte Radegonde and will pass the Saint Genes de Castillon, a charming village surrounded by vineyards.

Day 4 :  

Bergerac and its wine

Distance 1 : 29 Miles - 47 Km 
Elevation gain 1 : 213 Meters 

From Sainte Radegonde you will cycle through the vineyards to Bergerac, located on the Dordogne river, a large town with good rail access and services. This is your gateway into the famous Black Perigord area. The historic city is very picturesque with many places to visit including the Maison des Vins.

Day 5 :  

Ride Along the Dodogne River to Tremolat

Distance 1 : 25 Miles - 40 Km 
Elevation gain 1 : 440 Meters 

A fairly challenging ride, it involves some hilly terrain up to the viewpoint of Les Cingles de Tremolat. The ride will take you along a scenic route to Saint Sauveur and through the surrounding forests.

Day 6 :  

Les Eyzies and Font de Gaume

Distance 1 : 28 Miles - 45 Km 
Elevation gain 1 : 636 Meters 

A lot to see and visit on this day! Starting out easy you come to Audrix a small village with small roads and almost no traffic. Then down to Le Bugue and Gouffre de Proumeyssac, and then on to Les Eyzies - capital of Pre-History! Take time to visit this very charming town and its sites and museums including the Font de Gaume.

Font de Gaume is a cave that houses a collection of prehistoric polychrome cave paintings. Prehistoric people living in the Dordogne Valley first settled in the mouth of Font de Gaume around 25,000 BC. The cave was forgotten until the nineteenth century when local people rediscovered the cave. Paintings were discovered and date back from around 17000 BC, during the Magdalenien period. The caves most famous painting, a frieze of five bison was discovered accidentally in 1966 while scientists were cleaning the cave.

Day 7 :  

Ride to Sarlat

Option 1 : 14 Miles - 23 Km  Option 2 : 18 Miles - 29 Km 
Elevation gain 2 : 385 Meters 

The destination is the very charming town of Sarlat. This town with its cobbled streets, old roofs, and warm stone walls give an exceptional heritage. Sarlat is a medieval town built around a large Benedictine abbey from the Carolingian period. The Medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. Sarlat has remained a well-preserved city and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France.

Option: You can decide to ride a longer distance (with more elevation) going by the Chateau of Commarque (open to public), facing his rival the Chateau de Laussel (private).

Day 8 :  

Departure Day

Departure after breakfast, trains from Sarlat connect to nearby towns and on to Paris all day long. We can help with extra nights, car rentals, or other extensions to your tour.

Day : 1

Day : 2

The Auberge de la Commanderie is one of the historic sites located at the heart of the medieval town. The main part of the building was of templar origin and the annex was used as a last hiding place by the counter-revolutionary Girondin deputies. Both buildings are unique of old Saint-Emilion and were renovated in 2003 with modern amenities.

Day : 3
