Highlights

You will start your tour in St Guilhem le Desert (UNESCO site #1), a beautiful French village with one of the most amazing cloister in the world. The Metropolitan Museum in NY shows a replica of this architectural master piece. From there you will ride on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the resting place of St James (UNESCO site #2). From St Guilhem-le-Desert to Moureze, famous for its beautiful dolomitic Cirque de Moureze, you will travel through rural and quiet countryside with several stops possible in charming villages along the way before reaching the enchanting village of Moureze, an area reminiscent of the famous Italian Dolomites. Don’t overlook the wineries in this area as this is one of the most important wine producing region in the world..

Arrival in Montpellier train station & transfer to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert


Arrive at the Montpellier Saint Roch train station (old town), Sud de France train Station (outside town) or Montpellier Airport where you will meet our guide who will transfer you to Saint Guilhem le Désert to start your bike tour. Settle into your charming hotel, where you will have an orientation by our staff, and then you can explore this fabulous village.

The village is a UNESCO classified village and is a well known spot on the Camino de Santiago, not only for its Abbey, but also because it is built in a narrow valley. Go to the central plaza for a coffee or drink of your choice to soak up the ambiance of a village dating back to the year 804!

NOTE: In the Montpellier St. Roch train station, your guide will meet you at the "Information Desk" on first floor (Check 'Train Station Map' on the hyperlink below).

From Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert to Villeneuvette


Take some more time after breakfast to explore this fascinating village before you go out on a nice cycling trip to Villeneuvette. On this cycling itinerary, you will travel through rural and quiet countryside with several possible stops in villages along the way. You will ride on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain (UNESCO site #2), the resting place of St James (UNESCO site #2) This is also an important wine region, so tasting is very possible. You will pass the Lake of Salagou before you reach Moureze and then Villeneuvette. This little village is an outdoor place with some famous land formations that are reminiscent of the Italian Dolomites!

Distance : 45 Km (28 mi).

Elevation : 570 m.

NOTE : you need to buy your snacks and picnic at the beginning of your day, as you won’t have any possibilities after you reach the Salagou Lake.

From Villeneuvette to Béziers


Another day in the quiet back country of this region of Causse et Cévennes (UNESCO site #3) going to Beziers. From Villeneuvette you drop down onto a plain and can enjoy some flat riding and vineyard country.

Distance : 51 Km (32 mi).

Elevation : 610 m.

From Béziers to Siran


Leaving Beziers after breakfast, you will drop further south and west toward the Canal du Midi (UNESCO site #4). The ride starts out flat before getting somewhat rolling. You will pass numerous villages dating from another time. The highlight, and maybe your lunch spot, is Minerve. It’s an old Cathar bastion and ranked “One of the most Beautiful Village of France”. At the end of the ride you are in the village of Siran.

Distance : 67 Km (42 mi).

Elevation : 732 m.

NOTE : You won't have many possibilities to buy supplies on the route between Béziers and Minerve. During summer we recommend you to buy some water bottles in Béziers before leaving or in Murviel les Béziers.

From Siran to Carcassonne


While you are just a short distance from Carcassonne (UNESCO site #5), the eventual goal for the day, we invite you on a ride along the canal on the first part of your ride and finish by little roads to Carcassonne. Or, you can choose a longer diversion to Fabrezan and Lagrasse before dropping back into La Cite where your hotel is situated just outside the fortress walls.

***Please note that if you rent a road bike you will not be cycling on the canal path. Instead you will be on roads nearby. Only the longer route option is possible if you rent a road bike.

Distances : 47 or 73 Km (29 or 45 mi).

Elevation : 325 or 595 m.

From Carcassonne LOOP to Saint-Hilaire


Your bike ride is optional today. With all there is to see and do in Carcassonne, we inserted this day to use as you wish. We will include 2 cycling tours over flat terrain to see more of the surroundings while also leaving time to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site at Carcassonne.
