Alsace Wine Route
Located in the East of France, Alsace is nestled between the border of Germany and the Vosges mountains.
From Strasbourg to Colmar passing through the famous Alsatian Wine Route (Route du vin), this cycling trip will take you to the heart of Alsace. Cycling up the Mont Sainte Odile and through vineyards. You will visit the medieval town of Riquewirh, one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in France’ also famous for its great wine. The trip ends in Colmar with its very well preserved historical city center and its German Gothic architecture and early Renaissance style.
Alsace produces some of the best wines in France, such as Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The region also offers gourmet cuisine and has more Michelin star restaurants than any other region, so make sure you sample the delicious local dishes as well as the wine!

Day 1 : Arrive in Strasbourg
This city has easy rail access from Paris with the newly opened TGV line. Rail access from Frankfurt is also possible. Transfer to your Strasbourg hotel on your own and any free time is yours to explore this fantastic centreville. Orientation and bike set up with our local representative at your hotel. Old Strasbourg is typically cobbled walking streets, half timbered houses with carved stone porches and courtyards.

Day 2 : Ride the wine route of Alsace to Obernai
Distance 1 : 28 Miles - 45 Km
Elevation gain 1 : 305 Meters
Start your tour by riding out of Strasbourg on a well marked bicycle path which makes getting out of this city easy. You ride south to Obernai through charming small villages and the start of the wine route. Discover some of the many castles and vineyards in the surroundings.

Day 3 : Loop ride to the Mont Sainte Odile
Distance 1 : 21 Miles - 34 Km
Elevation gain 1 : 710 Meters
Today is a loop tour in the countryside around Obernai including Ottrot and the Mont St Odile. To visit: Mont Saint Odile monastery: during the Merovingian periods, Saint Odile, daughter of the Duke Adalric, founded a monastery here, which flourished. In the Middle Ages, the monastery was destroyed, then rebuilt by Herrade of Landsberg.

Day 4 : Ride to Riquewihr

Today you will cycle to Riquewihr, a medieval town right in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards, classified among the 'Most Beautiful Villages in France'. For centuries this magnificent town has managed to combine the quality of its architecture with the quality of its world-famous wines, from where it gets its nickname 'The Gem of the Alsace Vineyards'. Stay in a nice hotel in the old town.

Day 5 : Riquewihr to Colmar

Ride from Riquewihr to Colmar, passing by Turckheim. Turckheim is a former fortified town. You can still see the remparts, which are exceptionnally well preserved. The village also has several half-timbered houses, typical of the region. A nice ride through flowered villages like Kaysersberg including at the end, Colmar. You spend the night in a charming hotel in the center of the city. Challenging option to ride to the area of the 5 chateaux.

Day 6 : Loop ride or visit Colmar
Distance 1 : 25 Miles - 41 Km
Elevation gain 1 : 342 Meters
Ride a loop tour into the countryside to little charming village of Eguisheim and part of the Alsace wine route. Back to Colmar, this is home town of sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (best known for the Statue of Liberty). The well-preserved old city center houses several, sometimes large-scale buildings in German Gothic and early Renaissance style, as well as a number of old churches, among which the collegiale Saint-Martin (13th-16th Century) is the largest and most noteworthy.

Day 7 : Leave Alsace
You have easy rail access from Colmar to Strasbourg, from where you can catch a train back to Paris or Frankfurt.

The routes were really good, but the bikes were stand out. I was worried about how heavy they'd be, but they're clearly brand new, great brakes, and geared well for all the long long uphills. We did the long route from Riquewihr to Colmar and the hilly Obernai loop with no issues with the bikes. And with lots of road bikes passing us! ;) The hotels were good, good service in all of them and no issues at all. And it seems the hotels were upgrading us often to quiet rooms which are a bit bigger or with balconies. Not sure if that was to get the stinky Australians out of the way (which would be more than understandable) or if this was part of the reservation. Either way the rooms were great. The wines were great too, we did not visit the caveaus during the day as we didn't trust ourselves on a bike after a drink, but the wines in the restaurants were wonderful. Even sampled the crémant on one of the nights!

The routes and bikes have been great. Climb up Mt. Ste.-Odile was greatly rewarded with amazing views and an informative audio tour. We also did some wine tasting on the way back to Obernai. The accommodation has been first rate! Thanks for evrything!

Thank you again for planning our wonderful trip! We had a wonderful time and were very happy with our rides and accommodations, especially in Colmar. It was absolutely worth upgrading. One small thing was that it would have been helpful to have each ride start and end with our hotel in both the road book and GPS directions. By the end of the ride, we were pretty tired and the last thing we wanted to do was now hunt for our hotel on the second map. We had so much fun, each day felt like a dream! The hotel in Obernai seemed very high end, very beautiful, almost like a little village by itself with large room. All of the hotels were in great locations and all offered great breakfasts. The Hotel in Colmar was very historic. Of course the rooms were smaller than we're used to and the half covered showers weren't very functional for holding water in. It kept spraying out all over everything no matter how careful we were. The bike routes were awesome and very beautiful. We got to see a lot of towns along the way as well as beautiful countryside and vineyards. I just wish my wife were up for the long route to Colmar, but she was getting pretty exhausted. Unfortunately, she fell off her bike but she was still able to ride and hike. I was hoping for a hike next to a river with a waterfall, but Kaysersburg was an unexpected surprise with its historic castle and beautiful town. Next time we'll have to extend it by a few more days! We definitely recommend this trip to others. Thanks again!

This is a beautiful part of France and each village is stunning. So far we have been blessed with good weather and the hotels have been excellent. The luggage transfers and book in at hotel reception have been flawless and the Garmin GPS takes the guess work out of navigating. The major disappointment is that the route is quite challenging in parts which is fine for me but, at times, impossible for my wife. The route is listed as ‘hobby’ and, on the basis of that, we had decided on normal bikes when booking the trip. I would rate this as ‘Active’, especially the ride up to Mont St Odile. We are enjoying the trip but we wish we had an ebike for my wife. Price was not an issue. We were simply going on the rating you gave to the ride. The route is quite undulating. And beautiful. The trip was great, we had a wonderful time! The bikes were fine, heavy, just like last year but they are geared good for climbing so there were no problems. If I were to do the same route again I would want a road bike. As for the hotels they were fine. We were a little concerned about the Best Western at Riquewhir but the hotel was great as were the people that worked at the hotel. It just did not have the "character" of a European hotel. I would like to mention in particular one employee at the Hotel Hannong at Strasbourg. Her name was Virginia (American spelling and translation) she was tremendous. All bags were in our room waiting for us at every hotel except the St. Martin at Colmar. Bottom line; we look forward to doing this again next year..........with road bikes. Thanks for all you did in helping us plan our trip. It was a memorable trip and was a highlight of our vacation along with watching the Tour de France in Le Puy en Velay. I thought the lodging you set up for us was outstanding. The Hotel Cour d'Alsace in Obernai was a real luxury along with its restaurant. It's nicer than what we usually stay in and was a real treat. The Hotel St Martin in Colmar was great because it was so centrally located. Steve (I believe I remember his name right) who gave us our orientation in Strasbourg was very friendly and thorough. I also appreciate having the GPS because the trip would have been very tedious to navigate if we had just had the written directions [...] My wife and I really enjoyed sampling some of the local wines which are hard to find in the US and were amazingly good.
